Atmosphere

Wattie Karate is an inclusive environment. We still train hard – don’t be mislead – but the idea of a Karate family permeates through each class. The more senior students are responsible to help guide the more junior students, as it should be.
We hold to the rules of safety and respect, but allow a familiarity in the class to help everyone feel comfortable – especially the newer students!

Rules

1. Be Safe at All Times

    This includes:
      - No sparring allowed without an Instructor’s permission
      - No sparring without a referee
      - Students must wear protective equipment
      - Stay out of fights unless impossible to avoid
      - Report all fights to an Instructor
      - Report all injuries immediately
      - Personal cleanliness and hygiene are to be observed
      - Keep your fingernails and toenails short at all times
      - Remove jewelry before training

2. Show Respect

This includes respect to yourself, your instructors, your peers, your parents and everyone else too. This also includes bowing upon entering or leaving the dojo, as well as keeping your gi neat and clean.

3. Be Wise

Do not Misuse your Karate Knowledge.
Karate is NOT for going and beating people up. It is for Self Defense.
Also, if you're not a Black Belt, you shouldn't be teaching without Black Belt supervision and permission.

4. Practice, Slow Down & Concentrate

Shihan Dave incorporates this into nearly every lesson. These are critical steps to learning Karate.

5. Try - try again - try harder. Just try!

You can't get any better at a skill if you don't try. If you're choosing to train, then you have to be ready to try!

Students should obtain a gi no later than 2 months after beginning training. Sooner is always better, though.

Your gi should always be neat and clean, and unless given permission otherwise it should be:
White
Wattie Karate Gi

Black Belts will have other options.

Wattie Karate T-Shirt

You may way your Wattie Karate T-Shirt rather than your gi jacket during classes (belt and gi pants must still be worn).
Full gi must be worn at exams, tournaments, external seminars, etc...

Instructors

Shihan Dave

Chief Instructor

Shihan Dave has been training in Shorin Ryu Karate since he was very young, and is a strong believer in earning your acheavements. Hard work and using full technique and proper force during all training possible is important, and Shihan can often be heard saying, "Practice, Slow Down & Concentrate!"

After teaching at and operating different karate schools, Shihan opened Wattie Karate in Winchester, Ontario in 2013. Following expansion into Cornwall, Ontario in 2016, the program has continued to develop! Connections continue to grow in both communities and areas, as new students have continued to enter the program.

Shihan Dave continues to push all Wattie Karate students to learn, grow, strengthen and improve their skills!

Announced as the 2021 Master Instructor of the Year by the Independent Martial Artists Federation, Shihan Dave remains humbled and greatful for the continued support of all Wattie Karate students.

Invited Sr. Students

Asst. Instructors

As a part of the Wattie Karate family, senior students are invited to come to junior classes to assist. Teaching is a part of the curriculum for the higher belt colours, so that students are ready to lead classes once they earn their first degree black belt. These senior students work under the direction of a qualified instructor.
